Stellar Fireworks

Posted by admin on Jul 14 2007 | Space, NASA, Astronomy, Latest News, Science

Resembling an aerial fireworks explosion, this dramatic image of the energetic star WR124, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, reveals that it is surrounded by hot clumps of gas being ejected into space at speeds of over 100,000 miles per hour.

Also remarkable are vast arcs of glowing gas around the star, which are resolved into filamentary, chaotic substructures, yet with no overall global shell structure. Though the existence of clumps in the winds of hot stars has been deduced through spectroscopic observations of their inner winds, Hubble resolves them directly in the nebula M1-67 around WR124 as 100 billion-mile wide glowing gas blobs. Each blob is about 30 times the mass of the Earth.

The massive, hot central star is known as a Wolf-Rayet star. This extremely rare and short-lived class of super-hot star is going through a violent, transitional phase characterized by the fierce ejection of mass. The blobs may result from the furious stellar wind that is unstable as it flows into space. As the blobs cool, they eventually will dissipate into space and so don’t pose any threat to neighboring stars.

The star is 15,000 light-years away, located in the constellation Sagittarius. The picture was taken with Hubble’s Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in March 1997. The image is false-colored to reveal details in the nebula’s structure.

Earth Smaller than Before!!!

Posted by Srikanth on Jul 09 2007 | Facts, Latest News, Science

Some scientisits, with a wierd and wacky brain, have just discovered that the Earth is smaller than what was believed previously. The calculation was performed using a technique known as ‘Very Long Baseline Interferometry’. But can you guess by how much it is smaller??? Just 5mm!!!

The figure 12,756.274km is more than adequate for most people but scientists require much higher accuracy for measuring things like rising sea levels. So I guess they just did this stuff, and I still wonder aloud - Does it matter???

Lets’s hear what the scientists themselves want to say to this : www.news24.com

Martian dust storm affecting twin rovers!

Posted by Srikanth on Jul 05 2007 | Space, NASA, Astronomy, Latest News, Science

Mars Rover Imprint

As you know, two rovers - Spirit and Oppurtunity - had landed on Mars in, if I am not wrong, 2004. Well, they are in trouble now, and we can just hope it doesn’t worsen!!!

A powerful dust storm, which started a few days back on Mars, has worsened and is affecting the twin rovers’ operations on the Red Planet. The dust has blocked out the Sun, and as the rovers rely on Solar panels for charging their batteries, its bad news for the robots!

The highest dust activity is centered near Opportunity. However, weather data show the storm might have peaked, meaning the worst could be behind the rovers. Solar array energy on Opportunity dropped from 765 watt-hours to 402 watt-hours as dust levels increased over the past week.

The storm has already postponed Opportunity’s descent into Victoria Crater to learn more about the planet’s geologic past. Scientists hoped to send the rover into the crater this weekend, but unfavorable weather has delayed the entry until at least July 13.

Harry Potter Worm…Dangerous!

Posted by Srikanth on Jul 02 2007 | Hardware, Software, Operating Systems, Technology, Latest News, Science

Hackers are attempting to exploit Potter-mania with the release of a worm that attempts to infect USB memory drives.

The Hairy-A worm poses as a file containing a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the eagerly-anticipated final novel in the Harry Potter series, due out on 21 July.

The infected file normally comes on infected USB drives. If users plug these drives into their Windows PCs they are liable to infect their machines, especially if they have allowed USB drives to “auto-run”.

Infected drives contain a file called HarryPotter-TheDeathlyHallows.doc, a word document that contains nothing besides the phrase “Harry Potter is dead”, instead of the hoped-for transcript. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the worm begins casting its malign spell. The worm looks for other removable drives to infect before creating a number of new users (Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley) that will be familiar names to fans of the JK Rowling books.

Worst day of life - A JOKE!

Posted by Srikanth on Jul 01 2007 | Jokes, Humour

There’s a little guy sitting inside a bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for half-hour.

Then, a big trouble making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the guy, and just drinks it all down.

The poor man starts crying.

The truck driver says: “Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I’ll buy you another drink. I just can’t see a man crying. ”

“No, it’s not that. Today is the worst day of my life,” replied the man.

“First, I overslept and was late to an important meeting. My boss, outrageous, fired me. When I left the building to my car, I found out it was stolen. ”

The police had said they couldn’t do anything.

“I got a cab to return home, and after I paid the cab driver and the cab had gone, I found that I left my wallet in the cab. ”

“I got home only to find my wife was with the gardener. ”

“I left home and came to this bar. When I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison …”

Venus and Saturn Conjunction!

Posted by Srikanth on Jul 01 2007 | Space, Facts, Astronomy, Latest News, Science

Sky-gazers will be treated to a ballet in the heavens as the ringed planet Saturn courts Venus, in the western sky today evening…just 3-4 hours round the corner!!!

The two planets will come very close to each other as they circle the sun and give sky watchers a rare opportunity to enjoy the celestial phenomenon.

As the sun sets on July one, Venus will appear first, a bright point of light not far above the horizon and as the sky darkens, one will be able to spot Saturn just 0.4 degrees apart.

The celestial spectacle, called as conjunction of planets, could be seen with naked eyes.

Just go out in open and look where the sun has set and see the part of sky to the left and above, you will see the two planets almost touching each other - Enjoy the exquisite sight(I will!).

I hope the sky clears this month, because the two planets will start pulling away from each other during the rest of July…

The people in North America will not be able to see the planetary conjunction as two planets will be below the horizon at that hour for them, while in Europe the phenomenon will occur when it is daytime.

A good view of the closest approach between the two planets can be seen in Japan and Australia, where it will be sundown.

Google Desktop meets Linux…

Posted by Srikanth on Jun 28 2007 | Software, Technology, Latest News, Science

Linux-Google

A Linux version of Google Desktop has been released, with this tool now available on Linux, Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. Tthe Google Desktop application allows users to search their desktop and the web as easily as they search the web with Google.

One of the major features of Google Desktop for Linux (beta) include a comprehensive indexing function, that will enable searching the full text of virtually all of a computer’s content, including text, PDF, PS, source code, HTML files, email from Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org documents, Man and Info pages, folders, images, and music.

Google Desktop for Linux can even find previous versions of files or recover those that have been accidentally deleted.

The Quick Search Box is the fastest way to do web and desktop searches. Hitting the command key twice calls it up, instantly displaying results as users type.

The software also makes it easy for users to simultaneously search their Gmail webmail, web search history and the web at large. And because their index is stored locally on their own computer, users can even access their Gmail and web history while they’re offline.

If you don’t have Google Desktop, then please Download.
